When Did I First Feel Like a Grown-Up? Spoiler: I’m Still Not Sure!

When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

Let me tell you, the first time I thought I felt like a grown-up was probably a false alarm. I remember paying my first bill—electric, I think—and feeling like I had just conquered adulthood. “This is it,” I thought, “I’ve made it.” But then, reality hit. I looked at my bank account afterward and realized, “Wait… there’s more where this came from? Rent, groceries, and car insurance?!”

Turns out, adulthood isn’t a one-and-done situation.

Honestly, if we’re going to get technical, I think the real moment I felt like an actual grown-up was when I had to eat cereal for dinner because I forgot to defrost the chicken. I just sat there, spoon in hand, thinking, “This is it, this is adulthood. It’s about making do and pretending like you planned this all along.” Bonus points if you eat your cereal out of a mug because the dishes aren’t done yet.

Or maybe it was the first time I went to IKEA by myself and successfully put together a piece of furniture without ending up with a bag of leftover screws (that’s usually not a good sign, right?). Or perhaps the countless times I’ve told my kids to “ask Dad” when they ask for a snack five minutes after dinner. Because, let’s face it, being a grown-up means passing the responsibility sometimes, too.

In the end, I think adulthood comes in waves. Sometimes it’s there when you make responsible decisions (like taking care of your finances), but sometimes it’s when you eat popcorn for dinner in your pajamas because life is just like that sometimes.

All I know is, I’m still trying to figure out this “grown-up” thing. One missed alarm and cereal-for-dinner night at a time. 🤣😂🤣
