What are your favorite animals?
When asked what my favorite animal is, you’d think I’d have a straightforward answer. But life has taught me that my relationship with animals is… complicated, at best. Let me explain.
Cats: The First Betrayal
I used to think cats were cute, low-maintenance creatures who spent their days purring peacefully in sunny spots. That fantasy was shattered when one decided my oldest son’s face was a scratching post. I’ll spare you the gory details, but let’s just say it ended with a Band-Aid, a stern lecture to the cat, and me officially removing cats from the list of potential favorite animals. Cute? Sure. Safe? Absolutely not.
Dogs: The Next Contender
Naturally, I thought dogs might be a better option. Loyal, loving, and always down for a snack—what’s not to love? Enter Apollo. A handsome pup with energy for days and a penchant for… toddler food. One day, my little one left their plate unattended for just a moment (bathroom break, you know how it goes). When they returned, Apollo had transformed into a doggy vacuum, leaving nothing but crumbs and a look of absolute guilt. That was the day I realized sharing my home with a dog meant sharing everything, and I wasn’t quite ready for that kind of commitment.
Goldfish: The Last Hope
After Apollo’s reign of snack theft, I thought, “What about a goldfish? It’s quiet, doesn’t need walks, and won’t steal food.” But then I remembered that I have three kids, and honestly, keeping a fish alive feels like taking on another dependent. Imagine explaining to your toddler why Goldie didn’t make it. Nope, not today.
So, What’s My Favorite Animal?
At this point, I think my answer is “none.” Three kids running around is all the excitement (and chaos) I need. They’re cute, cuddly (sometimes), and constantly on the move. Honestly, it feels like I already live in a zoo—why add to the roster?
For now, I’ll stick to admiring animals from afar, preferably through a screen or behind a fence at the zoo. My favorite animal? Probably the one that doesn’t live in my house, doesn’t eat our snacks, and definitely doesn’t scratch faces.
