Breaking the Cycle: Why Procrastination Won’t Write My Next Book

What have you been putting off doing? Why?

We’ve all been there—staring at a project we know we need to finish (or even start), but somehow, we keep finding reasons to put it off. For me, that project has been my second book. After the success and impact of Highway to Healing, you would think I’d be diving headfirst into writing my next one, right? But here I am, pushing it back, waiting for the “perfect” moment, the right burst of inspiration, or the stars to align.

Why? That’s the question I keep asking myself. If I’m being honest, a big part of it is the pressure I feel to live up to the first book. Highway to Healing was such a personal journey, and sharing those stories with the world was both freeing and daunting. Now, as I sit here thinking about my second book, there’s this underlying fear: “Will it resonate? Will it be good enough?”

I’ve realized that procrastination isn’t always about laziness. Sometimes, it’s about fear. Fear of failure, fear of success, or fear of not measuring up to our own expectations. For me, there’s a lot riding on this next project because it represents the next chapter of my journey, both literally and figuratively. It’s not just about writing—it’s about continuing to evolve and grow, and that can be scary.

And then there’s life—the busyness of juggling work, family, coaching, and everything else in between. It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day, using those things as an excuse to push projects like this further down the list. But deep down, I know the real reason I’m procrastinating isn’t because I don’t have time. It’s because writing this book forces me to dig deep, and sometimes that’s harder than just going about my usual routine.

But here’s the thing—procrastination is a thief of progress. Every day I put off writing, I’m delaying not just the completion of the book but also the growth that comes with it. And when I think about the people who are waiting for this next project, people who might need the message it carries, I realize that I can’t afford to wait anymore.

So, I’m making a commitment to stop procrastinating and get to work. No more waiting for the perfect moment, no more stalling out of fear. The only way to move forward is to take that first step, even if it feels uncomfortable.

I encourage you to think about what you’ve been putting off. Whether it’s a project, a goal, or something personal, ask yourself why. And then, make the decision to take action. We all have things that scare us or feel too big to tackle, but nothing gets done by waiting.

As for me, this second book is coming—and it’s going to be worth the wait. But I won’t keep waiting to make it happen.

Remember: Don’t stop. Don’t settle. Keep stepping.
