Losing Yourself: The Subtle Drift Away From Purpose

Anguilla Resort 2024

It’s so easy to lose yourself. In fact, sometimes you don’t even realize it’s happening until one day you look in the mirror and ask, Who am I? We often get caught up in the demands of life, in other people’s needs, opinions, and expectations. We lose ourselves in relationships, careers, or the endless pursuit of success. Before we know it, we’re no longer living for ourselves, but for the roles we think we need to play.

But here’s the thing—while it’s easy to lose yourself in the noise, it’s essential to stay on course toward fulfilling your purpose. The world needs the real you, not the version of you that’s diluted by the weight of everyone else’s expectations. So how do we protect our sense of self and stay aligned with our purpose?

The Drift Away From Self

Losing yourself doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual drift that occurs when we prioritize everything and everyone else above our own inner needs and desires. Maybe you’re a parent who has poured everything into your kids, leaving little time to nurture your own growth. Maybe you’re a professional who’s dedicated years to climbing the corporate ladder, only to feel empty at the top. Or maybe you’re in a relationship where you’ve sacrificed your own dreams to make someone else’s life easier.

Whatever your situation, the truth is, it’s easy to become so entangled in others and things that you forget about you. You forget about the dreams you once had, the passions that used to light you up, and the purpose that you were meant to pursue.

Why It’s Important to Stay on Course

When we lose ourselves in others, we not only shortchange ourselves but also those around us. We can’t fully show up for the people we care about or the work we’re called to do if we’re not anchored in who we are. Living out your purpose is not just about you—it’s about the impact you’re meant to have on the world. If you’re constantly drifting away from yourself, you’re robbing the world of your unique gifts and the full expression of your purpose.

Staying true to your path is what keeps you grounded, fulfilled, and aligned with the life you’re meant to live. It’s not selfish to prioritize your purpose; in fact, it’s one of the most generous things you can do. When you’re operating from a place of authenticity and purpose, everyone benefits—your family, your friends, your community, and even the world at large.

How to Stay Aligned With Your Purpose

So how do you stay on course when life pulls you in so many different directions? Here are a few practices that have helped me stay grounded in my purpose, even when it’s been tempting to lose myself in others:

  • Set Clear Boundaries
Boundaries are essential for protecting your energy and staying focused on your goals. If you don’t set limits on what you give to others, you’ll quickly find yourself running on empty. Saying “no” to things that pull you away from your purpose isn’t selfish—it’s necessary. Boundaries give you the space to say “yes” to the things that matter most.
  • Prioritize Self-Reflection
It’s easy to lose track of who you are when you’re always in “go” mode. Taking time to reflect regularly on your choices, your desires, and where you’re headed allows you to course-correct when needed. Whether it’s journaling, meditating, or simply taking quiet moments to think, self-reflection is a powerful tool to help you stay aligned with your purpose.
  • Revisit Your Why
When you feel yourself drifting, take a moment to reconnect with your “why”—the deeper reason behind everything you’re doing. For me, my decision to #Heal4Real was fueled by my desire to show up better for my family, and to live out my purpose by helping others heal. Reconnecting with that “why” has kept me grounded through some of the toughest seasons of my life. Your purpose is your anchor, and whenever you feel lost, returning to that foundation can help you find your way back.
  • Give Yourself Permission to Evolve
Staying on course doesn’t mean you won’t change or grow. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Staying aligned with your purpose requires you to evolve, sometimes in ways that may surprise you. Give yourself permission to grow, to pivot, and to adjust your course when necessary. Purpose isn’t static—it’s fluid, and it can shift as you grow.

Finding Yourself Again

If you’ve lost yourself in the process of living for others, it’s never too late to find yourself again. Start by giving yourself permission to show up for you. Take small steps each day to reconnect with the person you are, the passions you hold, and the dreams you’ve tucked away for too long.

You owe it to yourself to stay on course and live out your purpose. Not just for your own sense of fulfillment, but because the world needs the real you—the version of you that’s fully aligned with your purpose and potential. The journey back to yourself is one worth taking, and it starts with the decision to stop living for others and start living for the life you’re meant to lead.

Don’t Lose Yourself—Find Your Purpose and Hold Onto It

Life will always try to pull you in different directions, but knowing who you are and what you’re meant to do will keep you grounded. Your purpose is your guiding light, and even when the road gets tough, it’s what will keep you moving forward.

Stay true to yourself. Stay true to your purpose. And never lose sight of who you are meant to be.

Don’t Stop. Don’t Settle. Keep Stepping.
